Trading Scottish football every week with Scottish Football Tips

Hello readers,

Disappointing weather conditions last week prevented us from tipping up anything at all in this column, which is a bit of a disappointment as we had a few early value selections in Airdrie and Clyde primed and ready to go. Postponements are a real bug bear of mine as in almost every instance the re-arranged match has the correct prices as the bookmakers have spotted where they have been caught out and adjust their prices accordingly.

However, the weather shouldn’t prevent any of our tips this week from going ahead.

We dive straight in with the Premiership and the Glasgow derby. Celtic go into the match at Ibrox with the chance to kill stone dead any talk of title races. A defeat and there won’t only be talk about a title fight, it will be a reality. Celtic are odds against for the first time in several years for a domestic match and that is enough to tempt us into a trade here. The bottom line is that Celtic are a far better side than Rangers and if they turn up they should win. Rangers will always have a punchers chance, but at the odds available we need to side with the green side of Glasgow.

In the Championship, I will side with my learned colleague Colin in siding with St Mirren. You can read his excellent analysis HERE. It’s that good that I literally have nothing more to say, other than to nod my agreement.

In League One, the big match of the day is in Ayrshire where the top two go toe-to-toe once again. However, whilst most eyes will be on that match we want to focus on East Fife against Airdrie. The Diamonds are a side that I have now been on the right side of for several weeks. They are a team on the up and we find them a touch overpriced away to a very inconsistent East Fife.

Into League two we go, and we finish off with two relatively small trades on outsiders that are both overpriced. We will attempt to take advantage on the Asian Handicap market. Stirling Albion could probably have done without the snow and ice as it interrupted a wonderful run of results for them. It’s tricky to predict what the break might do to their rhythm, especially against a side as capable as Peterhead. They will most certainly concede most of the possession and probably most of the chances in this match (as has often been the case this season), but Peterhead are without the talismanic Rory McAllister and Stirling Albion are more than capable of punishing the Blue Toon with any chances that do come their way. At the prices we need to side with the Binos.

The same also applies to a resurgent Clyde who travel to face Stenhousemuir. Two defeats in their last two are not a true reflection of where Clyde currently are. They were on a winning run of five in a row previous a couple of 2-1 reverses (against high flying Stirling Albion and the best side in the division in Peterhead). Stenny have not been as impressive as many expected. They have shown the odd flash of quality but overall the best I can do is describe them as workmanlike, and they still have a fair bit of work to do yet to ensure they guarantee themselves a playoff spot – which is the very least they would have expected from the season. Clyde have David Goodwillie leading the line – that touch of quality at this level can often be the difference, especially now that Clyde as a club have a bit of confidence about them again thanks to the influence of the impressive Danny Lennon in the dugout.

Good luck with your bets!
