Scottish League Cup Group D Betting Preview

Brechin City

Coach

Darren Dodds

Brechin City earned unwanted renown last season after going the whole league season without a win. While earning plaudits for their hospitality and praise for their stoicism a season like that could pay a heavy toll. Last season's squad has been all but decimated. Their most recent friendly, a 1-0 win over Highland League side Formartine Utd, saw five trialists make an appearance. It appears clear Darren Dodds is far from settled with his squad for the upcoming season.

Coach

Neil McCann

Steven Caulker

Dundee have set about removing the detritus from their rather large squad but two of their better players from last season, O'Hara and Leitch-Smith, went with them. They are looking to shift a few more yet and rumours of a Steven Caulker disciplinary issue should set Dee fans' pulses racing. But they should be close to up to speed after a training camp in Portugal that included some friendly matches.

Dunfermline

Coach

Alan Johnston

Star Player

Kallum Higginbotham

Alan Johnston is another manager facing a rebuilding job after club stalwarts from the past three to four seasons left. Aird, Cardle, Paton and Clark formed part of the nucleus of last season's attacking threat. While Johnston appears to have recruited players of a calibre suited to SPFL Championship level he remains light up front and he will no doubt still be looking. An upcoming friendly against Motherwell might give a good indication as to where they are before their League Cup campaign kicks off.

Peterhead

Win

500/1

Coach

Jim McInally

Star Player

Rory McAllister

Failing to get promoted last season was a blow to The Blue Toon. Particularly considering their squad contains players like Riley, Ferry, McAllister, Cairney, Gibson (and now Derek Lyle) who are all capable of a standard higher than SPFL League Two. Derek Lyle could be an excellent signing if his legs continue to carry him. As a result we may see lots of goals in Peterhead games. Going by last season, perhaps even at both ends. Mind Peterhead shocked Scottish football by pipping Hearts to qualification in this competition last season. It would be foolish to rule them out of this one.

Stirling Albion

Coach

Dave Mackay

Star Player

Mark Stewart

If MOTY awards were given out in October Dave Mackay was probably a shoo-in last season. But a poor mid season cost them a title challenge although a playoff place was no disgrace in his first full season as a manager. He has signed well again this year, too. Jason Marr and Mark Stewart alongside last season's returning loanees Neil McLaughlin and Danny Jardine should set them up for a playoff push again. Pre season form has been excellent with four wins from four. Tough group though.

Scottish League Cup Group D Betting Preview

With all the Scottish League Cup groups it is important to apply a bit of caution. Many sides will be using these games as an extension to pre season and a couple of lower league teams pipped more illustrious opponents to qualification last season.

Dundee are short priced favourites to win the group outright which they did manage last season in a group that featured a Dundee derby.  Although many observers remain unconvinced by Neil McCann if Dunfermline don't pull themselves together in time the favourites may seal the group with little approaching a challenge.

The Pars appear to have a bit left to prove so if they drop points against either or of the League One and two solid League Two sides qualification could be gone in an instant.

Peterhead are perhaps as likely as Brechin City to pose a threat despite being from a division below. While Stirling Albion have plenty to like about them they have landed in a difficult group and qualification is about as likely as the 20/1 quotes.
