East Fife

Coach

Darren Young

Star Player

Jonny Court

A sure fire sign East Fife are short bodies came in manager Darren Young subbing himself on in their most recent match, a 1-4 win over Lochee Utd. That result doesn't tell us much whereas their 0-4 defeat to Queen Of The South maybe does. But Young has had the chance to sign his own players this season and he has signed up a whole new team. Their whole season may hinge on Jonny Court and whether he can bring much needed goals.

Falkirk

Coach

Paul Hartley

Star Player

Paul Paton

Paul Hartley got the Falkirk Bairns moving in the right direction last season but they appear to have a ways to go before matching their form from the seasons before. Paul Paton will bring experience and plenty of bite to the midfield but the jury is out on the handful of signings from the lower reaches of English football and development leagues. Pre season friendlies have so far failed to breed much in the way of confidence.

Forfar Athletic

Coach

Jim Weir

Star Player

John Baird

The signing of John Baird from Inverness is something of a coup for The Loons. He was a major component in the Falkirk side who challenged Rangers and Hibs at the top of the Championship for a couple of seasons. Another decent signing is Gary Fraser from Partick Thistle but other than that they don't appear to have a lot to push them beyond another relegation battle.

Montrose

Coach

Stewart Petrie

Sean Dillon

Montrose are setting out for life outside the bottom division for the first time in a gazillion years. They will undoubtedly want to make sure it's not a flash in the pan. Transfer activity has been slow though and with big Chris Templeman retiring they'll be looking for impact up front. Patrick Cregg brings previous Premiership experience to the midfield but they need to do more work in the transfer market. Fast.

St Johnstone

Coach

Tommy Wright

Star Player

Murray Davidson

St Johnstone appear to have a hole in their pocket with incoming transfers thin on the ground. Although Tony Watt arrived, to much hullabaloo, bringing with him bags of unrealised potential. If Tommy Wright can get the best out of him we may see goals alongside the unlucky (with injuries) David McMillan. There seems to be a changing of the guard at The Perth Saints. Youth appears to be the focus with Jason Kerr, Chris Kane, Liam Gordon, Callum Hendry, Aaron Comrie and others looking to break through this season.

Scottish League Cup Group B Betting Preview

With all the Scottish League Cup groups it is important to apply a bit of caution. Many sides will be using these games as an extension to pre season and a couple of lower league teams pipped more illustrious opponents to qualification last season.

St Johnstone are rightly short favourites to win this group. On Tuesday they rattled up a 0-3 lead inside sixteen minutes at Berwick Rangers with a team missing most of their experienced players. Tommy Wright appears to be transitioning from the side which has served him so well over the last number of years though and these things tend to come with teething problems. Their season could hinge on Tony Watt and his level of success although David McMillan may also rise to the occasion.

Paul Hartley has earned promotion with every team it was possible with and will aim for the same again with Falkirk. But in a Championship that seems to get tougher year on year he has his work cut out. The League Cup could set a barometer for how hard they will hit the ground running as a lot of questions remain around their new signings.

There is every chance East Fife, Forfar and Montrose will be battling each other for relegation at the bottom of League One this season. Montrose appear to have a bit to do to step up. East Fife, under Darren Young, should edge any battle between them but they appear short on goals.

It's hard to see past the top two in this group although at such an early stage in pre season preparations you never really know.
