Aberdeen are continuing to feel the effects from qualifying for the League Cup Final.

Their poor form started immediately after beating Morton in the semi-final. The second best side in the country for the last two seasons have won three of their nine games since.

It’s all the more remarkable considering that semi-final victory was the last of a six game winning run. Until then Celtic were the only side to beat them in twelve domestic matches. Now you can add Rangers, Hamilton and Ross County to the list.

It’s hard to know exactly where things have gone so wrong. Although Derek McInnes’ continuous tinkering does not help matters. He changed things around again in last week’s defeat to Ross County only to hook his surprise inclusions long before the hour mark.

He has shown a remarkable lack of faith in Adam Rooney and Niall McGinn despite both being key players for three seasons. Without them The Dons appear to lack a killer instinct while heavily reliant on Hayes and McLean for goals.

Case For The Defence

But it’s actually in defence where his tinkering is having the most detrimental effect. Aberdeen have conceded a goal in all but one of their last nine games. The defensive make up has varied in every one, game to game.

It’s another part of the field where McInnes can’t make up his mind who or how to play and it’s having a huge impact on moral, team shape and fluidity.

Meanwhile Motherwell will be looking to their decent home form for confidence. Despite drawing 0-0 in their last home game they have a good goal record at Fir Park with nine goals in their previous three matches.

They have excellent attacking options particularly in Louis Moult who is earning a reputation as one  of the top strikers in the league. Two goals against Celtic brought him into the top four in the goalscorer charts with eight league goals to his credit.

Against a shaky Aberdeen backline he could be worth looking at to get on the scoresheet. But Motherwell as a team are certainly capable.

Aberdeen are favourites at 1.8 (4/5) with Coral. Motherwell are available at 5.25 (17/4) with bet365 while Marathon Bet are best price for a draw at 3.95 (59/20).

The Dons look too short for my money so taking Motherwell with a +1 Asian Handicap at 1.7 (7/10) with McBookie has to be considered. That has stake back insurance if they lose by the odd goal with any better result returning a winner. Draw No Bet insurance pays 3.84 (71/25) with Marathon Bet and can also be considered.

But both teams to score at 1.8 (4/5) with 888Sport looks to be a real goer. Backing +2.5 goals pays 1.83 (5/6) with Marathon Bet and holds less appeal.

Louis Moult to score first at 8/1 with McBookie and Paddy Power could also tempt.

Goals Stats

Both teams have scored in 5 of Aberdeen's last 7 matches and 4 from 5 on the road.

5 of Motherwell's last 7 home games have seen +2.5 goals.

Head To Head Stats

Each of the last 5 have seen both teams score.

The Dons have won 5 of the last 7 meetings but only 1 of the last 3.
