Kilmarnock v St Johnstone Betting Tips And Predictions

Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership

Location: Rugby Park

Date: 23rd December 2016

No side in the league, outwith Celtic and Rangers, has won more than two of their last five games. Killie and St. Johnstone have one each.

Kilmarnock have found themselves as high as sixth in recent weeks. They currently occupy seventh position. St. Johnstone have made fifth place their own over recent seasons and remain firmly within their comfort zone at the moment.

It shows just how competitive the Scottish Premiership really is for everyone but Celtic. Even Rangers, despite the criticism they have faced this season, have opened a seven-point gap in second, albeit that Aberdeen have a game in hand.

As far as ambitions go for Killie and St. Johnstone, Lee Clark may say otherwise publicly, but avoiding relegation would be classed as success. Tommy Wright should really be looking to move his team forward and challenge the likes of Hearts and Aberdeen for Europe. Although as it is, on recent form, they are more likely to get dragged down into a battle for the top six.

There are four points between the Perth Saints in fifth and Killie in seventh, although St. Johnstone do have a game in hand. There are only nine points between fifth and bottom. The reason for that is the number of draws around in the league at the moment. We could theorise about why that may be all day. Is it fear of losing matches? Are teams really that evenly matched?

It could be a combination of all of these things, but it looks to be all down to goals. Any side with a twenty-goal striker would quickly find themselves comfortably within the top six. Only three sides outside the top four have scored over twenty goals. St. Johnstone are also the only team in that mini-league to boast a positive goal difference. That explains why they are best of the rest.

This trend looks set to continue unless some goalscorers can be acquired in the January window.

Killie are a big looking 3.75 (11/4) with Marathon Bet for a home win. The draw is 3.50 (5/2) with McBookie. St. Johnstone are available at 2.15 (15/13) with BetBright.

Both these sides have drawn their last two matches, can either deliver a win for their fans for Christmas? As Kilmarnock have had the upper hand in this fixture and are the home side, I think 3.75 (11/4) for them to win is generous.

I have, however, been bitten by the number of draws we have seen in recent weeks, and can’t rule out another one here. Therefore I will go for a slightly safer option of Kilmarnock to lead at any time at 2.20 (6/5) with McBookie.

Goals Stats

St. Johnstone have only failed to score twice in nine away games. Both times were at Pittodrie.

4 of St. Johnstone’s 6 wins this season have been away from home.

Killie have scored in six of their nine home matches, but have only won twice at home.

Head To Head Stats

Kilmarnock have had the upper hand in this fixture recently, winning the last three (four of the last five).

Four of the last six meetings have seen only one of the sides find the net. Killie have four clean sheets in the last six.

Three of the last six matches have seen Over 2.5 goals. The other three have been Under 1.5 goals.

Best Bet
