Everyone needs to have asian handicaps explained, right? Do you get confused by half & quarter goals? Half wins and half losses, stakes returned and pushes? There’s a lot to remember.

It used to be easy. European Handicaps (EH) were fairly simple to master. +1 means your selection gets a goal start so if they only draw your selection still wins. -1 means they start a goal behind so if they only win by one your selection loses.

Then Asian Handicaps (AH) started becoming popular and all of sudden it was -0.5’s this and +1.25’s that. Plus one and a quarter, what does that even mean? What could that even mean? Why did AH become so popular anyway? And when did so many people need asian handicaps explained?

That’s an easy one. They became popular because they give extra options and an extra edge. The EH doesn’t have much flexibility to it. It’s a straight call, a goal for or a goal against.

With the AH markets you can add stake back insurance, half win and half loss insurance or just go for the regular extra goal. It’s a much better system and more often than not it pays more than the EH for the exact same bets. When you have asian handicaps explained to you you’ll never look back.

If you’re serious about making profit from sports betting then you need to master the Asian Handicap markets. The good news is that it’s rather simpler than you think at first glance. The table below explains each bet from 0.5 to 2.0 but an easy way to remember is this;

If the number is whole (0,1,2,3) you must win by more than that number to win but if you win by exactly that number you get your stake returned.

If the number is a half (0.5,1.5,2.5) you must win by more than that to win. If you don’t you lose your stake.

Quarter number asian handicaps explained.

If the number is a quarter (0.25,1.25,2.25) you get half your stake returned if you only win by the closest whole number e.g. if you back a team -1.25 and they win by one goal or you back -0.25 and they draw.

If the number is three-quarters (0.75,1.75,2.75) you get half your stake returned and half your stake wins if you win by the closest whole number e.g you back a team to win -0.75 and they win by one or you back -1.75 and they win by two.

When the price indicates two fields e.g -0.5,-1.0 that simply means that your stake is split between the two possible outcomes. The two fields are the equivalent of quarter numbers (e.g 0.0, -0.5 = -0.25).

It is important to remember when backing AH in-play that the score reverts to 0-0 immediately after you place the bet so only action after you place the bet counts. The example in the picture shows Bolseslav are winning 2-0 yet -1 is better than 2/1, because the bet you are about to place takes the score as 0-0.
