Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership

Location: Celtic Park

Celtic dropped points in the Scottish Premiership for only the third time this season against Partick Thistle in midweek. Next up the newly crowned six-in-a-row champions welcome Kilmarnock to Celtic Park.

In the absence of Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths, Celtic once again started without a recognised striker against Partick Thistle, and it showed. Despite having the bulk of possession and chances as usual, the Hoops only managed to breach a stubborn Jags defence once.

Thistle themselves were without their own talisman, Kris Doolan until his introduction as a substitute after 55 minutes. His arrival at 1-0 gave the Jags some extra impetus and they were able to equalise through Adebayo Azeez just after the hour mark.

Celtic had the opportunity to re-establish their lead almost immediately through a Scott Sinclair penalty. The Englishman’s miss from the spot was costly, however, and the Jags held on for an excellent point.

It is no surprise that with the title secured Celtic’s performance would drop off. It has been a remarkable season of intensity and consistency since Brendan Rodgers’ arrival at the club. The most important aspect from Wednesday’s match is that their unbeaten run remains intact.

Kilmarnock arrive at Parkhead on Saturday after holding Rangers to a 0-0 draw at Rugby Park. Celtic are of course a different beast, especially at home. But Killie are the side with nothing to lose and everything to gain as they push hard for a top-six finish. They are four points adrift of Partick Thistle, so it is outwith their control, but they can only take care of the job in hand.

The Hoops may have had a bit of a wake-up call against Thistle if they think they can cruise to the treble unbeaten. Brendan Rodgers will certainly be looking for a response from his players. Particularly with the Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers looming large.

Another one-sided affair if you go by the bookies odds, however this is a match with much intrigue nevertheless.

Celtic are barely even acca fodder at 1.14 (1/7). As the rest of the world lumped on them against Thistle during the week, we at Scottish Football Tips advised caution and went for Thistle +2 on the Asian Handicap at a generous price of 1.95 (19/20).

I am exploring similar options again for Killie, given that they are still in with a shout of a top-six finish before the split. Kilmarnock +2 on the Asian Handicap is cuurently 2.40 (7/5) with 32Red. Despite the experience of Wednesday’s game, the bookies rate Killie’s chances of emulating the Jags as much worse. Remember, Thistle were odds-on at 1.95 (19/20) to cover the same handicap. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, Thistle were already on a six-match unbeaten run, and are higher in the table than Kille. Plus, after failing to beat Thistle, Celtic will be out to get back to winning ways ahead of the Scottish Cup semi so Killie could face a backlash.

However, Celtic have only covered a 2 goal handicap against the Rugby Park side twice in the last 8 meetings. They won by 2 goals on another two occasions, which would have resulted in your stake back, But four times, Killie have covered the handicap with +2 goals. Three of the four were at Rugby Park though, so once again, caution is advised.

Killie have only failed to score twice in ten league matches in 2017, so I am going to look at them to get on the scoresheet again at Celtic Park. They have done so in two of their last three visits to Parkhead, despite being on the end of 4-1 and 6-1 defeats.

Whether through a bit of complacency or lack of concentration, Celtic have begun to concede more goals than was the case earlier in the season. Indeed, they have conceded in three of their last five matches – all three at home.

So with the expectation that Celtic could produce a response to drawing against Thistle, and are capable of putting half a dozen past Killie, as they did the last time the Ayrshire men visited, I will swerve the Asian Handicap this time. My best bet is Kilmarnock to score, at 2.00 (Evens) with Bwin. BTTS can also be considered at 2.25 (5/4) with Betfair.
