Our Scottish Premiership Tips have been consistently profitable for the past two seasons since they were devised. As the name suggests they are interested income from the game(s) of the weekend (occasionally midweek too) from the SPFL Scottish Premiership.

This week (and perhaps more often going forward) we will be looking at a Scottish Championship match. In his role as an opposition analysis scout Graeme has gained a keen insight into most of the sides in the SPFL Championship this season.

Worth using that knowledge to our advantage.

Ayr Utd v Dundee Utd

Friday 25th January - 19:45

Ian McCall’s Ayr United were the early pacesetters in the Championship this season while Dundee United and others struggled to get themselves out of the blocks.

It’s been all change at Tannadice, with a new owner and manager, and new staff at every level of the club from boardroom to coaches to players.

It will be a very different United side from the one that was embarrassed by a 0-5 loss at Tannadice in the last meeting between these teams at the end of November.

Lawrence Shankland scored four that night, helping him on his way to his season total of 28 goals in 26 games. Shankland will be the name on everyone’s lips as the teams are announced around an hour before tomorrow night’s 7:45pm kick off. The striker is reportedly being tracked by up to 15 clubs, with Rangers, Celtic, Hibs and Sunderland all credited with an interest among many others.

However, the 23-year-old has missed Ayr’s last 3 matches with a calf injury, and is doubtful for the game. The Courier reports that there is a strong suspicion that Shankland will make a dramatic return for this match, and while Ayr are certainly no one-man-team, the Honest Men would be significantly boosted if Shankland is fit and able to play.

Ian McCall’s side haven’t won a match since that demolition of the Terrors. Their next match, against Inverness Caley Thistle fell victim to the weather, and with that postponement, Ayr’s momentum was halted. In the 6 matches that Ayr have played since, they have drawn three, and lost their last three, culminating in that ignominious Scottish Cup defeat to Ayrshire junior side Auchinleck Talbot.

United have won 3 of their last 5 to draw level on points with Ayr in second, albeit that the Honest Men have that game in hand against ICT next Tuesday. Robbie Neilson has strengthened in the January window, with the likes of Aiden Nesbitt in from MK Dons, Cammy Smith joining from St.Mirren and Morgaro Gomis joining for a third spell at Tannadice.

Ayr are the only Championship side not to have done any business in the window, although defender Michael Rose has signed a pre-contract agreement with Coventry City. McCall is adamant that none of his players will be going anywhere until the summer, so the will he, won’t he saga over Shankland’s fitness to play seems certain to be the only question to be answered ahead of tomorrow night’s televised meeting at Somerset Park.

Stats

Ayr have won both of this season’s previous meetings, scoring a total of seven goals without reply.

However, they are without a win in six.

Dundee United’s Scottish Cup win at Montrose was their first away win in four.

Ayr’s last 5 matches have seen a total of 5 goals scored.
