This weekend’s Scottish domestic fayre is limited to the Irn Bru Challenge cup. However it is competitive stuff with 3 non-league teams still involved, a number of 20’s Premier teams and a couple each from North Ireland, the Republic and Wales. Bookies a bit uncertain, exactly as we like it and there are a number of value lines.

Airdrie ruined an almighty gamble on Albion Rovers last week, however the vagaries of Scottish football betting were all too evident. They signed five loan players from Hamilton and Motherwell in the 36hrs before the game. Fingers were burnt.

Over 250 players have joined new clubs. Loan deals make up almost 50 (this number will rise significantly in next week or three ). 30 plus from non-league ( mostly to league 2 sides ). A smattering from Europe and a few teenagers promoted from development sides. Finally add a tiny number of veterans stepping down from the top leagues.

Player moves in bottom 3 leagues have now topped 210. Stenhousemuir 13, Annan 12, Clyde 11, Dumbarton and two other teams with 10 additions top the recruiting league. Expect that number to rise above 250 before league season begins on 5th August.

Pre-season results have been studied, line ups digested and much pondering done. The bigger clubs, premiership especially have less training and game time under their belts than many of the lower league sides. It all adds to the mystique and intrigue of the first group matches.
