Ross County v Celtic League Cup Betting Preview

Scottish League Cup Semi-Final

Celtic may see this as a great chance of progression to a national final but it’s not quite so clear cut.

They are the champions and that bodes well but in the twenty-first century their relationship with the League Cup trophy hasn’t always been so rosy. This will be there sixteenth attempt and they have won it five times in that timeframe but only twice in the last ten years

They lost in a final to Rangers and Kilmarnock and lost out in the semi-final to Saint Mirren in 2013. The next year they were dumped out by Morton, bottom of the Championship at the time.

Of course Ross County knocked them out of the Scottish Cup in a Hampden semi-final in 2010. That was very much a Celtic in need of transition though, with Neil Lennon at the helm after replacing the much maligned Tony Mowbray.

If Ronny Deila needs a way of guarding against complacency he just needs to quote those figures. Or indeed, he need just refer to last seasons Scottish Cup semi-final when Celtic were cruelly undone in their pursuit of a treble by a horrendous refereeing error. Setting the team out to win convincingly and quickly should be a priority.

They are certainly coming into the game in good form with five wins and nineteen goals in their last five matches. Leigh Griffiths has been the predator in chief with eight of those goals cementing his reputation as Scotland’s top marksman.

The Staggies good form which sees them deservedly in the Scottish Premiership’s top four is predicated on their home form. Away from home they have won just four of thirteen games and scored in the second half only twice.

Their top scorer Liam Boyce is unlikely to make it so any chance of success could rely on the fitness of midfielders Woods and Irvine and Craig Curran up front. Jackson Irvine has been rested for the last two games but came on as a sub on both occasions and made a noticeable impact. The likelihood is he was been rested with this game in mind.

Ross County v Celtic League Cup Betting Preview

Celtic will be fancied by many as acca fodder at 1.33 (1/3) with Skybet and William Hill. Ross County are best priced at 10.5 (19/2) with McBookie while a draw pays 5.75 (19/4) also with McBookie.

Celtic should be capable of covering a -1 handicap at 1.91(10/11) with Paddy Power but they have only covered it in three of their last six meetings with the Staggies and in three of their last six cup semi-finals. Personally I would prefer to see that price a little closer to evens before investing.

On the goals front 1.57 (4/7) for +2.5 total goals seems a little short given the occasion although the stats for both Ross County and Celtic this season would back the bet up. Both teams to score definitely has a chance at 1.95 (19/20) with 888Sport but I prefer to wait for definitive team news before taking that on.
