Rangers all but won the Championship title on Wednesday evening without having to lift a toe to do it.
Hibs’ getting horsed by Morton has removed the spectre of their game in hand leaving an eight point gap that simply won’t be closed.
Worryingly it also means that Hibs failed to increase their gap over third place Falkirk. Worryingly because my biggest ante-post bet of the year was on Hibs to win the league without Rangers. It may be time to call that particular pedalo in and accept a 50% return.
For this game against St Mirren I had been considering looking at The Buddies on the plus handicaps such has been their resurgence under Alex Rae and David Farrell. A win for them on Saturday, unlikely as that is, would see them close to within two points of the playoffs.
The Gers, to me, were looking a little jaded and they did little to dissuade me from that opinion against Queen Of The South last weekend. They had Wes Foderingham and a Kenny Miller wonder goal to thank for collecting all three points.
Having failed to cover a handicap in any of their last six games it seemed logical that St Mirren would be able to at least keep the score down to a respectable level on Saturday. But what a shot in the arm that Morton victory is likely to be and it will certainly relieve a lot of pressure off the players.
I now suspect that we will see a reinvigorated side take the field on Saturday and that could spell trouble for The Paisley Saints.
Rangers v St Mirren Betting Preview Betting Odds
Rangers are of course strong favourites and can be backed at a best 1.2 (1/5) with McBookie. St Mirren are as high as 16/1 with Betfair with the draw coming in at a best priced 7.5 (13/2) with Paddy Power.
Handicap backers can get Rangers -1 at 1.57 (4/7) with Paddy Power and McBookie while -2 is 2.55 (31/20) with McBookie. Anyone who fancies going with my original thoughts can get St Mirren +2 Asian Handicap at 1.96 (24/25) with Ladbrokes.
Both teams to score is available at 2.5 (6/4) with bet365, Coral and Betfair and that is sure to tempt although St Mirren haven’t been banging them in for fun. For there to be +2.5 total goals is available at 1.55 (11/20) with bet365, and Betfair although that is a little short for my liking.
