Rangers v Saint Johnstone betting preview
Date: 20th September 2015.
Rangers had opened very short at home to the Premierships’s Saint Johnstone here. A price of 1.67(4/6) is still the generally available price but Skybet have extended them to 1.73(8/11) which is clearly better.
EDIT: Somebody else thought that 1.73 was too good to refuse and must have snapped it up as Skybet dropped the price to 1.57(8/13) by the time this preview was finished.
It still smacks of being a bit short considering the opposition. As good as Rangers have been this season this game represents a big jump in class compared to the likes of Dumbarton who Rangers struggled past on Saturday.
The recent form for Saint Johnstone doesn’t bode brilliantly after they lost out at Kilmarnock, but there are a couple of caveats to consider.
First off the Rangers manager Mark Warburton talks of resting players for this league cup tie. Or, to put it in his own vernacular “it allows us to make sure all the squad is involved”.
This doesn’t surprise me greatly. I have been saying all season that Rangers should take the Hearts approach to the cups this season. Last season Hearts effectively bypassed the cups and concentrated on promotion back to the Ladbrokes SPFL Premiership.
They weren’t helped by being drawn against Celtic early on in both cup competitions but neither the Hearts fans nor the Hearts management were unduly concerned.
That may seem unpalatable to Rangers fans who want (demand) to win everything they enter but the bigger picture is more important. Promotion back to the Premiership is ESSENTIAL for Rangers and anything that derails that should, in my opinion, be discouraged.
Saint Johnstone are the opposite. The Perth Saints actually rested the Premierships’ top scorer, Steven MacLean, on Saturday. Tommy Wright insisted it was to do with the pitch and not wanting their main man to get injured.
This is likely to be the case but did they not want him injured long term or immediately for the game on Tuesday? Probably both in fairness but I believe Tommy Wright has revenge on his mind having been knocked out by Rangers at Ibrox last year.

So getting on Saint Johnstone in some respect seems to be the preferred play in this one. Purely on value terms the away side seem to have plenty about them as there is no doubt that they can trouble Rangers on Tuesday night.
A goal for Saint Johnstone would seem highly likely and the price of 1.55(11/20) available with Ladbrokes seems unduly high. As such a price of 1.73(8/11) for both teams to score is difficult to bypass.
That looks likely to be the main bet for the night with a small investment on an outright Saint Johnstone win at 5.5(9/2) with bet365 for the sweat.
