Rangers will be hoping it’s not a case of diminishing returns as they host Livingston in the quarter final of the Scottish Challenge Cup.

Last year they reached the semi-final before being dispatched by Alloa and the year before it was defeat in the final to Raith Rovers.

The pattern suggests that Tuesday is the end of the line for Mark Warburton’s men but if anyone is brave enough to back Livi they deserve the 25/1 reward that would come with it.

But Rangers form has dipped a little of late as I found out to my cost having backed them on the handicaps in Saturday’s match.

They have conceded in 4 of their last 5 matches too and the manner in which they conceded on Saturday will certainly worry some Gers.

Is there a case for arguing that the squad is tiring? They were brought together quite late in the day by Mark Warburton and have played more or less the same team on three fronts this season already.

The way they battled to the end to pick up a 90th minute winner on Saturday is an argument against that but perhaps it’s time to rotate a few players on Tuesday evening.

The problem for The Gers is that their utilisable squad is actually quite thin on the ground. So far this season only 16 players have made more than 2 league appearances.

Defensively if they were to lose more than one player to injury or suspension they would actually be in a bit of sticky stuff.

So I think they should look at this Petrofac Training Cup tie and say “good game” but there are bigger fish to fry.

The Auchenhowie youngsters would surely benefit from getting a senior game in front of a decent crowd under their belts.

But will the Rangers fans accept that? Would the Rangers board accept that? Would the management team accept that?

Probably not but the prospect is enough to scare me off backing Rangers in any manner on Tuesday evening.

Gers v Livi Betting Preview Betting Odds

There is one bet that jumps out at me for the game at Ibrox and that is backing Livingston to get on the scoresheet. Coral have priced it up at a pretty massive 3.25(9/4) for +0.5 Livingston goals.

I will be placing a full Standard Bet Size on this one even though that kind of price would usually dictate me dropping the stake by up to 20% or more.

Livi are the reigning champions and, although in really poor form, have scored in all but two away matches this season.

At the weekend they should have done better against Saint Mirren had their chief goalscorer, Liam Buchanan, not missed an early first half penalty.

You can back both teams to score with Coral at a price of 3.3(23/10) but with such a small increase on the Livi team goals price I prefer to leave it.
