Rangers v Kilmarnock Betting Preview
William Hill Scottish Cup 5th Round
Date: 6th February 2016
Live on Sky Sports 1
Rangers and Kilmarnock are both one game away from a quarter-final berth in the Scottish Cup.
For Rangers it would be another feather in the cap of an already fine season. For Killie it would be a welcome distraction from a lot of going wrongs in their campaign.
The Ayrshire side are rudderless after Gary Locke left his post following the 0-1 home defeat to Hamilton Accies. Former Ger Lee McCulloch will take charge for this game. They have though signed a few new players in the transfer window including Northern Ireland international Lee Hodson.
He will likely go straight into the right full back position, an area Killie fans have been lamenting over for a while. However, it could take a bit more than a new full back to give them enough encouragement to take on The Gers at Ibrox.
The home side will have to do without their own January signings, King and O Halloran, who are both cup-tied. They should still have enough to see the game out but it’s unlikely to be as plain sailing as the bookies and many punters are predicting.
Much depends on the fitness of Jason Holt with his absence being keenly felt in the Rangers midfield. In the games he hasn’t played, three in total, Rangers haven’t been as convincing as they had been with him included. They barely squeezed past Falkirk and Raith while Morton put it right up to them even if they did eventually win by two clear goals.
If Holt plays I would have a lot more confidence in Rangers but if he doesn’t I wouldn’t be touching them at a very short price. Particularly as Kilmarnock have occasionally shown signs of some capability.
In a season plagued by inconsistency they have drawn with Celtic (twice), drawn with Hearts and beaten St Johnstone on two occasions. They have scored in more than 70% of their matches and all but three of their thirteen away games. If the likes of Kiltie, Higginbotham and Magennis show up Rangers won’t have this all their own way.

As much as I think Rangers will win this game I couldn’t touch them at a price that has shortened to as low as 1.3 (3/10) in many places. The best price still available is 1.44 (11/25) with Paddy Power and Coral.
Killie have drifted to as far as 8/1 with Ladbrokes with the draw now available at 4/1 with bet365, McBookie and Ladbrokes. The more they drift they more backable they become with a plus handicap but it also makes another bet more backable, too.
Both teams to score is currently 1.91 (10/11) with Coral, William Hill and bet365. That’s a price I would be happy to take considering Killies’ scoring record this season. It’s also worth noting that Rangers have conceded in four of their last five home games, mostly to sides below Kilmarnock’s standard.
I am going to let it run for a little while longer to see if it can get any closer to even money.
