Rangers v Annan Athletic Betting Preview
Betfred Scottish League Cup
Date: 19th July 2016
Rangers opened their season with a good 0-2 win at Motherwell.
An impressive second half performance featuring two excellent goals from Tavernier and Waghorn secured the victory. But The Gers continue to look a little less secure in defence. Motherwell could, perhaps should, have scored at least once in the first half alone.
Mark Warburton still has work to do if Rangers are to be realistic title challengers. We should see the first additions to the defence on Tuesday night with Clint Hill and Lee Hodson likely to make their debuts.
Elsewhere we should expect a lot of changes to the side that beat Motherwell. Joey Barton is also in line to make his debut along with a ream of new signings from middle to front. The effect of so many changes is unlikely to debilitate them enough to give Annan Athletic much hope.
The Galabank side lost their season opener to Stranraer and face a much stiffer test at Ibrox. Keeping the score to a minimum should be their aim here. Jim Chapman is more likely to treat the game as an excellent chance to gain experience than to look upon it as remotely winnable.
They have lost both of their top scorers from last season. Smart Osadolor has joined Stranraer and the experienced Peter Weatherson has moved into the junior ranks with Shettleston. As per they have made a near full squad of new signings and therefore may need time to gel.
But it is still early in the season and there is a chance that the Rangers starting line up have played more Pokemongo than they have with each other. As such the temptation to go wild on the handicaps may be better tempered than encouraged.
Rangers v Annan Athletic Betting Preview Best Betting Odds
Rangers are of course incredibly short favourites to win this tie. Ladbrokes have the best price on offer of 1.1 (1/10). Annan Atheltic are priced at 33/1 with Betfair while draw backers can get 11.5 (21/2) with McBookie.
The handicap line is drawn at -2 goals. Paddy Power are offering even money on Rangers and that is a little tempting. It is certainly preferable to backing Rangers to score +2.5 team goals at no better than 1.5 (1/2) with bet365.
But you can never discount Annan from getting amongst the goals which they seem to do more often than their status determines. Seventeen year old midfielder Przemyslaw Dachnowicz, who signed from Rangers, might just fancy his chances after opening his account at the weekend.
Both teams to score is available at 2.75 (7/4) with Coral but would need to drift much further to tempt me. The prices for goals are of course short with +3.5 goals the most likely at 1.8 (4/5) across the board.
In reality, though, this looks to be a game best left alone.
