Motherwell v Rangers Betting Preview
Betfred Scottish League Cup
Location: Fir Park
Date: 16th July 2016
If their preseason is anything to go by Motherwell could struggle against Rangers.
The Steelmen won two out of five games but suffered morale sapping defeats to Cowdenbeath and Arbroath. That follows a poor end to last season that saw them win just two of six games culminating in a 7-0 mauling at the hands of Celtic.
They have lost a plethora of players over the close season including a good chunk of their midfield. Mark McGhee has signed plenty too. A much needed goalkeeper arrived in the shape of Dean Brill from Inverness. Rumours suggest that Ben Heneghan, their latest defender, was wanted by a number of clubs from the English Championship.
But with the likes of Stephen Pearson and Josh law exiting stage left they have got ground to make up. They could potentially take time to blend and time isn’t on their side with a difficult draw for the League Cup group stage.
Rangers are the only unseeded side from the Scottish Premiership. Most clubs will have wanted to avoid them. Mark Warburton has added genuine quality to the squad over the close season. Most notably in the form of Joey Barton and Niko Krankjar.
However, he has also suggested that he may use the League Cup as de facto friendlies. The Gers have only played one game so far on their US tour and consequently could still be rusty. Joey Barton will play no part having only joined up with the squad.
Therefore team news could be a vital cog in deciding which way to swing with this one. Although goals could certainly come into play having featured heavily in Motherwell’s preseason encounters.
Motherwell v Rangers Betting Preview Best Betting Odds
Rangers are favourites to win the tie but have drifted out to 1.91 (10/11) with Betfred. Coral are offering the best price on a Motherwell victory of 4.75 (15/4). McBookie are the highest price for a draw offering 4.7 (37/10).
Games ending in draws may be more common with the new format changes. There is an extra point available if teams win out in a penalty shoot out at the end of stalemates. At the available price this game might be a half decent shout for draw finders.
But goals do look likely which accounts for the low prices on offer. Both teams to score is no better than 1.67 (4/6) with 888Sport. Meanwhile the best you will get for +2.5 goals is 1.71 (5/7) from the same firm.
