Motherwell v Hamilton betting preview
Location: Fir Park.
Date: 2nd January 2016
At least one side has kept a clean sheet in all but one of the last seventeen Lanarkshire derbies between Motherwell and Hamilton Academical.
That’s a crazy stat that has to end some time but if either side is to keep a clean sheet this weekend it sure as hell won’t be Accies. On Wednesday they couldn’t hold out for a draw with Inverness with just moments remaining after scoring themselves. Twice!
They have kept just one clean sheet in fifteen matches and they will be up against a Motherwell side who are bang in form right now. The Steelmen have won as many games in their last three as Accies have in that fifteen game run without a clean sheet.
Since a 3-0 loss away to Ross County they have faced three of the top four sides in the country in Hearts, St Johnstone and Celtic. They have come out the other side with seven points and another three points sandwiched in between against Dundee.
Ten points from twelve against that sort of opposition is great going for Mark McGhee in his second stint as Motherwell manager. Before Wednesday’s win over St Johnstone they were in tenth place but a win on Saturday could lift them as high as sixth and on current form I wouldn’t back against them finishing there.
They have real experience in the squad from McManus, Lasley, Pearson, McDonald, Clarkson and McFadden to aid the exciting talents like Grimshaw, Moult, Ainsworth and Johnson.
It’s just one win in eleven games for Hamilton with thirteen goals conceded in their last four defeats. Goals have still been flowing for them, mostly, but after drawing three blanks in their last six away games it is becoming hard to see where they are going to come from.
Conceding a losing goal in the manner they did on Wednesday could shatter an already straining confidence. Or it could galvanise them but I am betting on it being the former.

The old adage is that form goes out the window when it comes to derbies but I am not a big believer in that one.
Hamilton are untouchable for me at a best 3.25 (11/5) with McBookie with the draw priced at 3.6 (13/5) also with McBookie. There is no way I could back any other result than a Motherwell win here and at a price of 2.2 (6/5) with bet365, Coral, McBookie, Skybet and Paddy Power I would be happy to do so.
But I am going to side with the stats and back Motherwell to Win To Nil at 3/1 with Paddy Power and Coral. They have won just one of the last six Lanarkshire derbies but most of them went with form and this time ‘Well are the form side.
