The Steelmen are heading into this game in great form, which is just as ‘Well because there is a lot at stake.
Ignoring the title race that Celtic are involved in the battle for the top six has come down to the last game and stretches all the way from fourth to ninth place. Motherwell hold the best chance to qualify as it would need all of Dundee, Thistle and St Johnstone winning to dislodge them (a point will do St Johnstone if ‘Well lose).
As unlikely as that seems it is far from impossible as all three of them face off against the three teams with the worst form in the division. That means that Motherwell would really like at least a point against Celtic to guarantee their place in the top half.
With Celtic’s title ambitions also taking a bit of a dunt against Dundee on Tuesday night this game is as far from a dead rubber as you can get and Celtic have problems heading into this game. Leigh Griffiths hasn’t scored in four games and they are lacking in genuine creativity.
With Tom Rogic injured, Kris Commons frozen out and Patrick Roberts blowing hot and cold as all young wingers do it’s imperative that Griffiths gets back on the goals trail. After Griffiths and Rogic, Nir Bitton is their next highest goal scorer so without those two on form someone needs to step up to the mark.
They have some defensive issues to worry about, too. Sviatchenko and Lustig were taken off injured on Tuesday evening and could be added to the burgeoning defensive injury crisis. That could leave a back four of Ambrose, Boyata, Mulgrew and Tierney and at least two of them won’t inspire confidence.
Motherwell have performed admirably against Celtic this season and on current form shouldn’t be discounted at all. That being said, if more concrete team news reveals Celtic to be near full strength and Aberdeen beat Hearts on Friday night you should expect them to be on it.
Celtic haven’t dropped points in two consecutive away matches since August 2014 and with the pressure on they really ought to deliver.
Motherwell v Celtic Betting Preview Best Betting Odds
Celtic are priced up at 1.4 (2/5) to win this match virtually across the board. Motherwell are best priced at 8.7 (77/10) with Marathon Bet while the draw is best with Paddy Power at 5.5 (9/2).
Both teams to score has a chance but is short at 1.83 (5/6) with Skybet and McBookie. There is every chance that the game becomes a must score for at least one of the teams at some point so goals could be backed at 1.63 (5/8) with Marathon Bet.
The Celtic Halftime/Fulltime bet that I often favour for away games let me down on Tuesday but if team news is favourable and if Tom Rogic in particular plays I could have another pop at it at 2.1 (11/10) with Coral.
