Betfred Scottish League Cup
Date: 19th July 2016
Greenock Morton collected two points from their first match but are hard to have faith in to increase that.
They are overwhelming favourites with the bookies to win this tie and their price is shortening by the minute. That offers some opportunity to oppose them and I can see plenty of reason why we should.
The Ton have lost a lot (if not all) of their best players from last season. Their main strikers last season were Denny Johnstone and Declan McManus. Both of them have returned to their parent clubs along with Alex Samuel.
As has the darling of the Morton fans, Luca Gasparotto, who was very highly regarded last season. He has moved on to Falkirk on a permanent basis after returning to Rangers. Raith Rovers have snapped up Bobby Barr leaving them shorn of creativity on the wings.
Consequently they look light up front and less solid at the back. Jim Duffy looks set to wait for loan options before attempting to strengthen. That comes at the cost of their League Cup qualification chances.
They were limited to very few chances against Albion Rovers and a side with more attacking threat may have seen them off. Clyde, arguably, have that attacking threat and it comes in the form of a player the Morton fans will know very well.
Peter McDonald spent at least four seasons down The Clyde across two spells but never recaptured his original form second time around. At thirty-five he is certainly past his best but if anyone knows how to ruffle the Morton defence it will be him.
The likes of Jon Paul McGovern and Scott Linton bring plenty of experience at a higher level and they have also signed the highly rated Dylan Easton from Elgin City.
Morton may have enough guile to see Clyde off in the end but they are unlikely to have things all their own way.

Morton have shortened right into a best 1.37 (7/19) with Marathon Bet. As a result Clyde have drifted to 9/1 with Paddy Power and may lengthen further. The draw is available at 4/1 with McBookie and others.
I can’t be having the price on Morton so have to look to Clyde in some respects. Backing them to win outright may be overreaching but the handicaps should certainly offer some potential.
Clyde +1 Asian Handicap is available at 2.5 (6/4) with bet365. That offers stake back insurance should they lose by a single goal. Any better result returns as a winner. There is of course an element of risk to it but given the reasons highlighted above it may represent a little value.
