Lincoln Red Imps v Celtic Betting Preview
Location: Victoria Stadium
Date: 12th July 2016
Live on BT Sport Extra
Celtic will get their annual Champions League qualification gauntlet run up and running on Tuesday evening.
But the date is the most remarkable thing to note about this encounter against Lincoln Red Imps . Scottish football fans will at least raise a chuckle about Celtic opening their season on the 12th of July. In Gibraltar of all places.
The last remaining British enclave on the European continent is a political hot potato. But a hotbed of football it is not. The Imps may have a grand time of it in their own league. They actually hit a goals tally in double figures on at least four occasions last season.
Regardless, a match against the reigning champions of Scotland will be a step too far. Furthermore, it is unlikely to offer much in the realms of betting, either. The most noteworthy aspect will be a chance to gauge how far Celtic have come under the tutelage of Brendan Rodgers.
The Hoops have played four preseason friendlies on their recent tour and have avoided defeat in all of them. Friendlies do of course tell us very little but Rodgers has been happy with what he has seen so far.
What will worry him, if not for this match but future encounters, will be the defensive crisis he has on his hands. Simunovic, Boyata, Mulgrew and Lustig all played no part in those four matches. Efe Ambrose made a welcome (perhaps) return for the last two.
It’s not just missing the friendlies that is concerning. They have also missed most of the preseason. It is when Celtic get through this tie and they will, without doubt. It is then that the concerns will begin to manifest more clearly.
Celtic will benefit from the competitive test but we shouldn’t expect to get much from it and certainly not from a betting viewpoint.
Lincoln Red Imps v Celtic Betting Preview Best Betting Odds
We can skip the WDW markets entirely and go straight to the handicaps. The line is now drawn at Celtic -2 and Paddy Power offer 2.1 (11/10) for that. You may find it difficult to put faith in Celtic winning by three in their first competitive game and that is entirely understandable.
Lincoln Red Imps +3 is available at the same price from Betfair but is drifting. If you do fancy that as an option it could be best to wait until closer to kick off for a better price.
Backing both teams to score could be a genuine option. It is available at 2.9 (19/10) from Coral. Over 3.5 goals is priced at 2.1 (11/10) with Paddy Power and shortening. Under 3.5 goals is 1.8 (4/5) with Coral and Betfair.
Goals may well be the best option and waiting for inplay markets may the best advice.
