This Hibernian v Rangers game is a direct prelude to the Scottish Cup final.
At least that is the case for Rangers who have little to do but bide their time until the Hampden Park showpiece in May. They have four meaningless games between now and then and half of them will mean just as little to their opponents.
For Hibs there is a lot still riding on their four remaining fixtures. They need to make up six points on Falkirk to have a chance of gaining second place and avoiding two difficult playoff games against Raith Rovers at the end of an already very long season.
They have a chance but they are relying on Falkirk dropping some points or getting the maximum from their own four games while picking up some big scoring wins. It must all start on Wednesday night.
Both Hibernian and Rangers played out gruelling Scottish Cup semi-finals at the weekend with both of them eventually making it through a penalty shoot out. Both sides will be fatigued, physically and mentally.
It’s hard to know which side is going to react better but there are a few things playing to Hibs’ advantage. They have had an extra day to recover and that should have a small part to play. They also have a bigger squad to utilise should they choose to with Rangers a little threadbare.
The Gers could only field four outfield substitutes on Sunday against Celtic. They will have O Halloran and King back from being cup tied and you can expect them both to start. The question yet to be answered is who will get a starting berth alongside them.
It’s a difficult balancing act for Mark Warburton. On one hand it would be good to keep momentum swinging in their direction but on the other one or two injuries could leave them very light for the cup final. Team news will be vital before making any decisions on the outcome of this game.
Hibernian v Rangers Betting Preview Best Betting Odds
Rangers are the bookies favourites and I am a little surprised to see Coral quote a high price of 2.38 (11/8) for a Rangers victory. Hibernian can be backed at 3.3 (23/10) with Betfair and that’s a price that is drifting while the draw is available at 3.7 (27/10) with Ladbrokes.
My plan of attack will be to wait for more concrete signs of team news for this one. If Rangers make a lot of changes (they just might) and Hibs are close to full strength backing Hibs with Draw No Bet insurance at 2.3 (13/10) could be the right strategy.
