Location: New Douglas Park
Date: 9th August 2016
Hamilton Accies confounded their critics with a strong performance at Ibrox.
The midfield was a key component in that 1-1 draw with Ali Crawford in devastating form. But their new signings also look like they have plenty to offer for the season ahead.
There was no surprise in Massimo Donati. He has been around the block in Scotland so we knew what to expect. The only surprise is in him landing at New Douglas Park in the first place.
New defender, Giorgis Sarris, looked very solid. He was helped by a secure and confident performance by Remi Matthews. The twenty-two year old Norwich loanee looks a very capable replacement for Michael McGovern.
Their first teams experience will be invaluable as Hamilton Academical had nothing but teenagers in reserve. Most notably they had a near team of players who came through the ranks in the match day squad. It’s the Hamilton way and they continue to succeed at it while many others fail.
That brings with it concerns over consistency. But if they can replicate some of the quick and intricate passing on display on Saturday they will be a tough ask for anyone. While Morton’s early season form has been good they may have a tough time of it on Tuesday.
Greenock Morton went through their league cup group stages unbeaten. They also kept a clean sheet in all four matches. But the only higher ranked side they defeated was Kilmarnock and they have made a terrible start to the season.
The 1-1 draw with St Mirren is likely to be a much more accurate reflection of their standing. Once again The Ton were a matter of minutes from their first win in the Renfrewshire Derby for eons. But once again they failed to hold on.
Failing to hold on could be the least of their worries on Tuesday Evening.
