Dundee could leapfrog their Perthshire rivals with a win over St Johnstone on Friday night.
The Dee certainly have the better form with just two defeats in their last eight games and four wins in that time. The Perth Saints have no more than two draws to show for their last eight games with five fruitless games without a goal at the start of that run.
At least they have found their goalscoring touch again and as such have something to build on. Scoring three goals against Aberdeen, as they did on Saturday, is no mean feat. The return of Graham Cummins has added pace to their attack which is badly needed now that Michael O Halloran has moved to Rangers.
The problems in the main for St Johnstone are defensively particularly now that Dave McKay has been ruled out through injury. He has been replaced by former Alloa defender Michael Doyle who was on the verge of signing for Cork City in the League Of Ireland.
Dundee have defensive issues of their own exacerbated by the horror knee injury to James McPake in the Dundee derby. There are only three teams in the league who have conceded less than Dundee so they have had to rely heavily on their strikers being on form but boy are they on form.
Kane Hemmings has been ratcheting up the score count with ten goals in his last eight games. It was enough to earn him the Ladsbroke Premiership player of the month award for January. Having drawn a blank in the cup at the weekend he will no doubt be itching to get the back of the net bulging again.
All this leads to one simple conclusion that goals will be a major factor in this game.
Dundee v St Johnstone Betting Preview Betting Odds
Dundee are justifiably favourites but not by much at a best 2.62 (13/8) with McBookie and many will contend that there is value in that price. St Johnstone are as high as 2.88 (47/25) with Skybet while the draw is best priced at 3.4 (12/5) with bet365 and McBookie.
Both teams to score is 1.87 (87/100) with 888Sport and that is the bet that I prefer. You can back +2.5 total goals at 2.1 (11/10) with Coral and there is reason to believe that has possibilities.
The last time the teams met there was a goal for each side within twelve minutes. There is certainly scope for backing a goal inside the first fifteen minutes at 3.1 (21/10) with William Hill for an interest.
