Betfred Scottish League Cup
Location: Dens Park
Date: 30th July 2016
Dundee look likely to bow out of the Betfred Cup at the group stages.
But there was more chastening news for The Dee fans to digest on Wednesday afternoon. Last season’s top scorer, Kane Hemmings, has left the club for pastures new.
With Paul McGinn already gone and Gary Harkins told to find somewhere new that is a big blow. Particularly with the continued speculation around Greig Stewart leaving his situation up in the air.
Dundee were looking likely to at least threaten the top six places but now the threat of relegation is a real concern. They have always had issues with their defensive solidity and Paul McGinn’s departure made that worse.
But they were, more often that not, rescued by an outstanding front line that started with Harkins and finished by Hemmings or Stewart. The prospect of none of those three starting the league campaign should have Dundee fans up in arms.
Furthermore it could have a destabilising effect on the squad. Their performances have been below par as it stood with only one half against Dumbarton worthy of praise. Missing two of their three talismanic forward players can only shroud them in doubt going forward.
Against Forfar they should be expected to win out. But they are coming off the back of an excellent victory over group leaders East Fife on Tuesday night. As hard as it is to believe Forfar have a better chance of qualification from the group.
A win for the League Two side could see them top the group if Peterhead fail to beat Dumbarton. And given the turmoil at Dens Park it is not outside the realms of possibility.
