Both Dundee and Aberdeen have been having problems scoring goals.
This is chiefly down to both sides missing their main creative force from last season. The difference between the sides is that Aberdeen are about to get theirs back.
Johnny Hayes performed so well last year that he got international recognition. He destroyed defences from Celtic to Dundee Utd with his direct running. His return to the team last week is a major boon for Derek McInnes.
The Dons also have another wee ace up their sleeve. Young Norwich loanee, James Maddison, is turning heads. The expectation is that he’ll be turning defenders inside out sooner rather than later. He impressed last weekend in his first cameo appearance for the side and could start this time around.
They need something to spark them into life what with Adam Rooney temporarily losing his way on the goals trail. It is almost certainly temporary and with Hayes and Maddison set to increase the number of chances he’ll be back soon enough.
Aberdeen remain a stubborn defensive outfit. But for the four goals they conceded at Celtic Park they would have the meanest defence in the country. They will make it difficult for Dundee’s misfiring attackers.
The Dee’s joint top goalscorer in the league is midfielder, Mark O Hara. He has been a revelation under Paul Hartley but they need goals from another source. El Bakhtaoui is now off the mark and perhaps he could soar.
But with the exception of Rory Loy their forward line is very inexperienced at this level. Coming up against the experienced backline of Aberdeen is a big task for them to overcome. Although they may have some joy in the middle of the park.
The absence of Jack and perhaps Shinnie could leave Aberdeen short. But it may open a chance for young Maddison to shine.
