Dundee Utd v Motherwell Betting Preview
Date: 16th February 2016
Second chances don’t come too often but Dundee Utd have another opportunity to drag the second bottom side into the relegation battle on Tuesday.
When Steven MacLean awarded Hamilton Accies a late penalty on Saturday The Arabs’ fading survival hopes were teetering on the brink. Kawashima stepped up to the mark and saved a lot more than Ali Crawford’s poorly hit penalty.
With Kilmarnock winning 0-2 away at Motherwell the gap between bottom and second bottom actually increased but that precious point garnered by Kawashima means that at least some hope remains. A win over their now nearest targets, Motherwell, would see the gap reduced to nine points with a game in hand.
At the beginning of January, after defeat in the Dundee derby, had you offered even the most optimistic fan three wins, a draw and a defeat to Celtic from the upcoming five matches they would have snapped your hand off. While the draw with Hamilton stalls the momentum slightly there is definite progress in the Terrors’ survival bid.
The Steelmen will arrive at Tannadice in terrifying form of their own. Since being roundly skelped 6-0 by Hearts they have picked up no more than a solitary draw in the subsequent five matches. Mark McGhee’s return to Fir Park looked promising with just one defeat in his first seven matches and a rare victory at Celtic Park. The top six was being mooted as a target but now the prospect of another relegation battle looms large.
Motherwell are looking light in midfield again, with Stephen Pearson absent, and disorganised defensively having conceded at least twice in five of their last six games. Form is squarely pointing to Dundee Utd with Sinama-Pongolle and Edward Ofere also coming into the mix.
Had they kept the momentum up with a win at Hamilton it would have been easier to have complete confidence in a home win. Equally, had Crawford scored that late penalty it would have been easier to dismiss them. They should be going all out for the win here because this time there are no second chances.
