Dundee Utd v Celtic betting preview
Date: 15th January 2016
Live on BT Sport
Both Dundee United and Celtic made it through to the next round of the cup against League 1 opposition on Saturday but it was much more comfortable for one of them.
That’s hardly surprising when you consider the respective resources and the league positions. There is a real danger that The Terrors could find themselves up to fourteen points adrift in last place after this weekend’s matches.
In an attempt to stave off relegation the Dundee Utd board and Mixu Paatelainen have been doing some shopping. In recent weeks they have brought in Sinama-Pongolle, Guy Demel, Kawashima and Finnish striker Riku Riski.
Sinama-Pongolle got injured in his first few games and Demel, who has looked the part, is suspended for this tie having been sent off in the Dundee derby. Kawashima made his debut in that game and looked like an excellent acquisition for the first forty minutes.
Flapping at a cross he gifted their city rivals an equaliser and the rest, as they say, was a victory for Dundee. Riku Riski made his debut as a second half substitute on Saturday and may have to settle for a place on the bench against Celtic.
The Hoops shouldn’t have too much to concern them in this game even if Dundee Utd did win their first game in ten at the weekend. Celtic strolled past Stranraer making it seven wins in their last eight domestic away fixtures. The only game they failed to win was the draw at Hearts, rescued for the home side by an absolute screamer from Osman Sow.
There a few absentees with Boyata, Mulgrew, Brown and Bitton all missing. That could leave them with a weakened midfield and defence which might be a concern for anyone planning on backing them on the handicaps.
Otherwise they have been performing well away from home and getting in front early doors has been a defining characteristic. They have been leading at half-time in seven of their ten away games in the Scottish Premiership this season going on to seal the victory in six of them.
Dundee United v Celtic Betting Preview Betting Odds
Celtic are strong favourites at a best 1.4 (2/5) with Betfair and William Hill. You can back Dundee United to win at 8/1 with bet365 and Betfair while the draw is priced at a best 5.4 (22/5) with McBookie.
It’s Celtic’s early dominance in away games that catches my eye for this one and backing them to be winning at half-time and to win at full-time seems to have a touch of value at 2.1 (11/10) with 888Sport. Alternatively you could back it at even money with Ladbrokes and Betfair.
Handicap backers might fancy this one with Celtic -1 coming in at evens with Boylesports and Coral. You will get a better price by backing them -1.5 on the Asian Handicap markets at 2.05 (21/20) with bet365 and McBookie.
