UEFA Champions League Draw 2016/17
The draw for the UEFA Champions League Qualifying Rounds takes place on Monday morning at 12:00pm. Celtic will be included in the draw for the 2nd qualifying round. They could meet a winner from one of the 1st qualifying round ties or an unseeded side entering at the 2nd qualifying round.
There are a total of thirty-four sides in the draw for the 2nd qualifying round. These sides include Dundalk, The New Saints, Salzburg, BATE Borisov and Eric Sviatchenko’s old club side, Kobenhaven. Celtic will be seeded for the 2nd qualifying round draw so should avoid most of the big sides but there are some banana skins.
The champions of Isreal, Hapoel Beer Sheva, for example or the champions of Sweden, IFK Norrkoping could make for a difficult competitive bow for Brendan Rodgers. Dundalk from The League Of Ireland are another team best avoided having pushed BATE very close last season.
Winning through the 2nd qualifying round will be an imperative for Celtic as the next round offers the parachute of a Europa League qualifier should they fail at that stage. Should they progress through the 3rd qualifying round they will be guaranteed at least a Europa League place.
At that point plenty of the big guns will enter the fray and Celtic may even find themselves unseeded and facing an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League group stages proper. But there are two rounds to get through before any sights can be set to that stage.
