Celtic v St Johnstone Betting Preview
Location: Celtic Park
Date: 23rd January 2016
St Johnstone couldn’t have picked a worse time to hit a bad run of form with a league cup semi-final waiting in the wings.
The Perth Saints haven’t won for five games and worse than that they haven’t scored a goal in those five games either. This regression came immediately after a run of nine wins in eleven games. In that time they earned a reputation for being the kings of goal production and now they have had two 0-0 draws in their last four matches.
Something has gone wrong at McDiarmid Park although it’s impossible to put a finger on what exactly that is. At the very least it gives credence to the notion that things average themselves out over time and St Johnstone are experiencing what data analysts call “regression to the mean”.
Celtic have started to regress themselves. After a bit of a torrid time they have found their form banging in twelve goals in their last two games. There is no doubting that Dundee Utd and Hamilton Accies contributed somewhat to their own downfall but Celtic deserve credit for taking full advantage of their frailties.
Leigh Griffiths has scored a remarkable twenty goals in nineteen league games and nine goals in his last five matches. He is playing like a man possessed or at least like a man with a point to prove. Given his and his teammates current form and St Johnstone’s season long defensive difficulties The Hoops could well be on the verge of another big win.
St Johnstone will likely give Celtic a sterner test than they have had of late but they have conceded three times to Celtic in the last two head to heads. The last of those came when St Johnstone were smack bank in the middle of a fine run of form so when out of form it could be worse.
Celtic v St Johnstone Betting Preview Betting Odds
Celtic are priced reasonably here at 1.25 (1/4) with William Hill. St Jonstone can be backed at 12/1 with McBookie, Coral and Betfair while the draw is best priced at 6/1 with McBookie.
My preference is to go for -2 Asian Handicap at 2.14 (57/50) with 888Sport. That bet has stake back insurance should they win by exactly two goals and is very unlikely to lose should they score +2.5 team goals.
