You could forgive Celtic fans for looking at the UEL and thinking what could have been.
In truth they should be looking at it and thinking what should have been. After throwing away good leads against Ajax and Fenerbahce they are rooted to the bottom of their group.
Amazingly they are still in with a chance of qualification. Like Scotland’s chances for their European Championship hopes just a few disappointing months ago they have to win their final two group games.
It’s a slim chance, as Scotland’s proved to be, but it’s in their hands. Beat Ajax and Fenerbahce and they are through to the knockout stages virtue of their head to head record.
Only the most optimistic Hoops fans will see a clear path of qualification and I assure you there are not too many of them around. Even winning their first game on Thursday night is a forlorn hope for many.
As a football bettor you would need to use some super strength mind control techniques to make me put my money on a Celtic victory against Ajax. I made that mistake against Molde so lesson learned.
Especially with Nir Bitton and Stefan Johansen both suspended and Scott Brown’s participation still touch and go.
But there is one market that everyone should take quite seriously when it comes to Celtic in Europe. No prizes for guessing what it is.

A draw looks to be of little use to Ajax as they really need to put the pressure on Fenerbahce who are two points above them in the table.
Convention certainly suggests that a game between two sides that need to win leads to goals more often than not. That’s before you even take Celtic’s record into contention.
Every one of Celtic’s four UEL matches has gone over 2.5 goals with three of them going over 3.5 goals. Both teams have scored in all four, too.
