Brechin City v St Johnstone Betting Preview
Betfred Scottish League Cup
Location: Glebe Park
Date: 26th July 2016
St Johnstone are one of a handful of teams likely to finish on maximum points.
When most Premiership teams were struggling in their first games against lower league opposition The Saints were pleasing Tommy Wright no end. They have continued their fine form with a a comprehensive victory over Falkirk at the weekend.
It may have taken three penalties to get them up and running but they appear to have dominated the match. The form of Danny Swanson will be particularly pleasing for Saints fans. He is off the mark with three goals to his name already this season.
Keeping a clean sheet against a side as difficult as Falkirk will also be pleasing. Conceding goals is the one area that may have unsettled Tommy Wright last season. While the only defensive addition has been Keith Watson from St Mirren they appear more secure at the back.
The midfield is where Wright focused his efforts in the close season. Blair Alston, Michael Coulson and Paul Paton have been their main signings. The strengthened midfield could be a real boon for them this season and they are likely to dominate most games.
They should certainly dominate Brechin who stumbled at the weekend after making a strong start. Their 2-1 victory of Falkirk’s conquerors, Stirling Albion, was followed by a surprising 4-2 defeat at Elgin City.
Darren Dodds has made plenty of changes to the squad that only just escaped relegation last season. Alan Trouten has returned to the club and will likely add plenty of goals from midfield. As might Ally Love who scored thirteen league goals for Albion Rovers last season.
Despite their recent defeat they have goals about them. And despite St Johnstone’s recent defensive probity they might face a stiff test here.
Brechin City v St Johnstone Betting Preview Best Betting Odds
St Johnstone are deserving short favourites but good for accas at 1.55 (11/20) with Ladbrokes. Brechin City can be backed as high as 6.8 (29/5) with Marathon Bet who are also best price for the draw at 4.7 (37/10).
Ally Love in could provide an interesting betting opportunity. Some databases have him listed as a defender. He is not a defender. If markets open for anytime goalscorer (none at the moment) he could represent some value IF he is considered a defensive player.
