There have been many changes at Dundee Utd over the summer break.
In the wake of Mixu Paatelainen’s failed survival bid a lot of players have been shown the door. But many others have been retained. The nucleus of the squad for this season played plenty over the last season or more.
Crucially, perhaps, they have held on to some of their brightest young talents. Spittal, Donaldson and Telfer should be more than able to hold their own in the Scottish Championship this season. They have also held on to some of their more experienced campaigners.
Sean Dillon, Paul Dixon and Henry Anier remain at the club. They are augmented by some good looking signings in the close season. Cammy Bell brings lots of experience and quality to the number one jersey. Tope Obadeyi brings excitement, pace and real attacking threat. Lewis Toshney has followed manager Ray McKinnon from Raith Rovers to bolster defensive options.
There is still plenty of genuine quality in The Arabs’ squad. Will it be strong enough to gain promotion? That remains to be seen and they have landed in a very difficult League Cup group, too. Inverness and Dunfermline will be tough opponents but they should have enough in hand to see off Arbroath.
Arbroath appointed Dick Campbell as manager in March and he didn’t get off to the best of starts. The Lichties have won just two of his eight games in charge. They have signed a Canadian international goalkeeper and former Cowdenbeath youngster, Josh Thomson, but it will take more than that to turn their fortunes around.
They did have a very good preseason result with a 1-0 win over Motherwell. That was against a very young ‘Well side, though. Raith Rovers subsequently saw them off quite comfortably in a 0-4 defeat.
Arbroath v Dundee Utd Betting Preview Best Betting Odds
Dundee Utd are strong odds on favourites at a best price of 1.53 (8/15) with Skybet and Coral. Arbroath have a best price of 6.1 (51/10) with Marathon Bet. Marathon Bet are also best price for a draw at 4.65 (62/17).
You won’t get much value on the goals markets with +2.5 goals no better than 1.62 (8/13) with Marathon Bet. Both teams to score may be worth considering at 1.8 (4/5) with 888Sport but wouldn’t tempt me, personally.
The first game of the season can always be hard to judge. None the less there is temptation in the price of 2.4 (7/5) from Paddy Power for Dundee Utd -1 handicap. Should they replicate their 0-5 friendly win over Brechin City it will scoosh in by half-time.
A wee small stakes season opener may do no harm at all.
