Alloa v Rangers Betting Preview
Location: Indodrill Stadium
Date: 16th August
Losing out to Celtic in an attempt to sign Scott Allan will have disappointed Rangers fans but this Alloa v Rangers betting preview should be a source of some solace.
The Gers have got their season off to a flyer with an attacking side that looks to have plenty of goals about it. The only down sides are heightened expectation and a defence that’s yet to prove it is completely up to the job.
That’s probably because both full backs have been marauding forward and that inevitably leaves gaps for other teams to exploit.
Between them Lee Wallace on the left and James Tavernier on the right have scored four goals in four competitive outings. That’s a pretty good return from your full backs. Most teams would take that from a striking partnership.
The best that can be said for Alloa is that they have a good man at the helm. Danny Lennon probably still feels aggrieved with the way he was chased from Saint Mirren, having brought more success to that club than they had seen for decades.
At Alloa he will have the stomach for a relegation battle having being embroiled in one annually with the Paisley Saints.
Unfortunately their form so far leaves a lot to be desired with a narrow 0-1 away win to non-league Brora the only bright spot in a start that includes an extra-time defeat to League 2 Berwick Rangers.
Alloa v Rangers betting preview
While Lee Wallace has been the most recent goal grabber Tavernier still looks the more likely. With both available to back for first goalscorer at 20/1 with Boylesports it could be a case of take your pick. My pick would be Tavernier.
Boylesports, our current bookie of the month and partner in our free bet competition, are miles ahead of the pack with the 20/1 price. Skybet, Betfair and William Hill, for example, are as low as 10/1 which wouldn’t in itself seem unreasonable.
Backing Rangers to win at 1.4(2/5) is very short and with a defence that can’t be trusted it is also slightly risky. They should at least cover a one goal handicap but 12:30 kick offs worry me for handicaps as teams can often seem sluggish in early kick offs.
The even money mark for the -1 handicap with bet365 and others is round about where the price should be anyway so it’s hard to see value in that one.
Goals will certainly feature in Rangers’ games this season so it’s little wonder to see +2.5 goals priced up as low as 1.53(8/13) with Stanjames.
A better angle might be to look at both teams scoring priced at 1.91(10/11) with William Hill or, indeed, a Rangers win with both teams scoring at 3.35(47/20) with 888Sport.
Regular readers will know that I often prefer to delve into correct score markets in instances like this and 888Sport are topping the prices charts for this game.
Rangers to win 1-2, or 1-3 and even 2-3 and 2-4 are not inconceivable in this situation, so it might be better to cover all bases with the Match result and both teams to score market price.
But one correct score price that does appeal is Rangers to win 2-4 at 60/1 with 888Sport. Given the way Rangers are playing, which is very cavalier, I would suggest ding dong high scoring matches could be a feature this season.
That price is hard to refuse for a small stake and will do more than enough to keep me interested in the game on Sunday morning.
