Aberdeen v Ventspils Betting Preview
UEFA Europa League 2nd Qualifying Round
Date: 14th July 2016
Aberdeen flattered to deceive in the previous round while almost causing irreparable damage to the coefficient.
But getting through was the number one priority. Now that progress has been achieved it is time for The Dons to look forward and prepare for another test they should overcome.
Ventspils qualified for this round by comfortably seeing off Vikingur from the Faroe Islands. While that didn’t create any reverberations they have had the odd good result in Europe of late. They have actually lost just one of their last eight Europa League ties.
In 2013 they made it all the way to the third qualifying round by beating opposition from Wales and Luxembourg. Their run ended with defeat to Maccabi Haifa but they did draw the home leg 0-0. In between their Europa League exploits they ran Malmo very close in the Champions League.
Another concern for Aberdeen will be that Ventspils are thirteen games into their league season. They currently lie third overall a full seven points behind the league leaders. But Aberdeen’s biggest concern will be their own level of performance and rightly so.
They only turned up for a portion of one half over the two legs last time around. In fact, their progress came down to two goals scored in injury time. Without the penalty awarded seven minutes into injury time they would be out. And Scottish football would be embarrassed.
They have to raise their performance up a couple of notches to safely negotiate this tie. It is my guess that Adam Rooney will reclaim a starting berth and Niall McGinn should return from a week of rest. Myles Storey should also be available having joined from Swindon Town via Inverness.
Aberdeen v Ventspils Betting Preview Best Betting Odds
Aberdeen are strong odds on favourites to win this leg with a best price of 1.44 (11/25) from Stanjames. Ventspils are as high as 8.3 (73/10) with Marathon Bet to cause a shock. You can back a draw at 4.8 (19/5) also with Marathon Bet.
Handicap backers can get 2.2 (6/5) from Paddy Power for Aberdeen with a -1 handicap.
Both teams to score is priced at 1.9 (9/10) with Stanjames which seems a little short. But that may be preferable to the 1.7 (7/10) from bet365 for +2.5 goals. There may be some value in the under 2.5 goals price of 2.25 (5/4) from Paddy Power.
