Aberdeen got back on track with a fine win over Motherwell on Friday night.
Their performance was reminiscent of the old Aberdeen, the Aberdeen we were used to over the past two seasons.
The return to form was down to the reinstatement of their Irish attacking triumvirate of Rooney, Hayes and McGinn. Rooney and McGinn both scored while Hayes was in scintillating form on the wing.
Before the game The Dons manager, Derek McInnes, stated he was playing his best team. It makes you question which team he had been playing up until now and why? And, most importantly, will he pick his best team for this game?
If he does play his ‘best team’ then we should expect them to carry on from where they left off. They are coming off their finest attacking display for some time.
But their defensive inconsistency continues to plague them. McInnes changed the back four for the tenth game in a row and the lack of cohesiveness is plain to see. Motherwell scored one and having missed a penalty should have got at least one more.
Until Aberdeen can find some defensive solidity they will always be at risk of dropping points. Particularly at home where opposing teams sit deep and make it difficult for them.
Although Hamilton may be the least likely team to do that. In their 0-3 home defeat to Celtic they played a very high defensive line. They were punished by Leigh Griffiths breaking the line and Aberdeen have players who can do the same.
If they utilise the same defensive strategy it is not too difficult to see The Dons taking control of the game and winning with something to spare. Especially as Hamilton have lost each of their last six trips to Pittodrie without scoring a goal.
