Aberdeen v Fola Esch Betting Preview
UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round
Date: 30th June 2016
Who really knows what test Aberdeen are set to face against the Luxembourg side?
I think I do, in all honesty. I have watched League Of Ireland sides perform against sides from Luxembourg in each of the last two years.
First of all Dundalk saw off Juenesse Esch and they managed it with plenty to spare. Then, last season, UCD beat the current champions F91 Dudelange over two legs.
Nobody should underestimate the importance of that result. While a cursory glance at Esch’ European results over the last few seasons might give cause for concern, respectable draws against Gothenurg and Elfsborg , for example, do look like decent results. However, it is that UCD result that should shed some real light.
At the time UCD were in the League Of Ireland First Division. They qualified for the Europa League via the UEFA Fair Play lottery having been relegated the previous season. As a result they became an extra representative for Ireland in the competition.
You could probably align UCD with the lower reaches of the SPFL. They are a League 2 side at best and while shock results are always possible, winning out over two legs shows the sides to be at a similar level. Slovan Bratislava won the next round 6-1 on aggregate. Aberdeen should be capable of at least matching that.
Niall McGinn will of course be absent following his exertions at the European Championships. In addition, Aberdeen have a number of new signings to bed in. Miles Storey, Callum Morriss, Neil Alexander and a host of others have joined the Pittodrie side.
The nucleus of the side should resemble last season so it shouldn’t affect them too much.

With one firm opening Aberdeen at 1.3 (3/10) you can see the difficulty in gauging the relative strength of the sides. You will get no better than 1.11 (1/9) now from Marathon Bet on a home win.
The question that needs to be answered is whether it’s worth taking a risk on the handicaps? Paddy Power have priced Aberdeen -2 goals at 1.91 (10/11) and that has reason to tempt.
When they started their European adventure under Derek McInnes in 2014 they saw off Daugava Riga with a 5-0 home win. But then they struggled to score against Macedonian opposition last season so there is still an element of risk.
